Hercule terrassant l'hydre . Le monstre , au corps de chien , avait de multiples têtes. Cinq ou neuf selon les uns, cent, selon d'autres. Parmi ces têtes l'une était immortelle. Quant aux autres têtes, chaque fois que l'on coupait l'une d'entre elles il en repoussait deux. Lerne  se trouve près de la mer, à quelque distance de la cité d'Argos. A l'ouest se dresse le mont Pontinos, avec son bois de platanes sacrés. Chaque année, des rites nocturnes et secrets se tenaient à Lerne en l'honneur de Dionysos qui était descendu au Tartare à cet endroit pour aller chercher sa mère, Sémélé, et, non loin de là, étaient célébrés les Mystères de Déméter Lernéenne, dans une enceinte qui marquai...
